Ujjayi Pranayama Definition

Ujjayi Pranayama is roughly translated in English as ocean breath or hissing breath.

Ujjayi in Sanskrit is referred to as “Victorious” or to “Conquer”.

Practioner Level

This is basic level pranayama which can be performed by anyone.

You need to limit the number of breaths to 5 maximum as a beginner.

Over a period of time, you can increase the number of breaths.

Sitting Asanas for Ujjayi Pranayama

You can sit in any of the sitting asana such as Padmasana, Siddhasana, Vajrasana etc before doing Ujjayi Pranayama.

If you do not want to sit in any of the asanas mentioned above, you can sit in the most comfortable asana called sukhasana.

How to do Ujjayi Pranayama?

Here is a step by step procedure on how to do Ujjayi Pranayama.
  • Sit in a comfortable asana.
  • Relax your body by taking 2-4 deep inhalation and exhalation.
  • Inhale the breath slowly through your wind pipe (throat).
  • Slowly exhale the breath through your mouth, softly utter the sound "hhhaaa" sound while exhaling.
  • During inhalation ensure you closed your mouth and inhaling through your nose only.
  • Note that you should be contracting the back of your throat to make an ocean sound.
  • Initially begin with 2 minutes to 5 minutes and then gradually increase the time up to 15 minutes to 20 minutes.
