What is Sarvangasana?

Sarvangasana is roughly translated in English as Supported Shoulderstand.

Salamba Sarvangasana meaning in sanskrit, “sa” means with , “lamba” means support, “sarva” means all, and “anga” means limb.

It is also called by other name that is Salamba Sarvangasana.

Practioner Level

This is an advanced level yogasana which can be performed by the person who is already been practicing the yogasana for a very long time.

The advanced yogasana practitioner can do this without the support of the hands.

The Sarvangasana which is performed without the support is called as Niralambasana.

In Sanskrit, “Niralamba” means without support.

How to do Sarvangasana?

Here is a step by step procedure on how to do Sarvangasana.

  • Lie down on the floor with your back facing downwards.
  • Keep your legs together and your arms by your side.
  • Take a few deep and slow breaths for about 3-5 times.
  • Relax your whole body muscles with slow breathing.
  • Lift both the legs, buttocks, and back with your elbow support to your lower body.
  • Stand high on your shoulders. Use your hands to support your back.
  • Ensure you keep your elbows close to each other.
  • Be in that position for about 30-60 seconds.
  • Your whole body weight should be on your shoulders and upper arms.
  • Do not support your body on your neck or the head.
  • Keep the focus of your eyes on the tip of the toes for 30-60 seconds.
  • For releasing the pose, you need to slowly bring your knees on your chest and slowly move your legs.
  • Take the support of your hands to move your body slowly to the ground as you release the pose.
  • Finally, lie down on the floor and relax.
